Take the survey: What is it like to be a Black journalist or media worker in Canada?
If you are Black and work (now or previously) as a journalist or media worker* in Canada, you’re invited to take the Black Journalists and Media Worker survey.
In the first academic research study focused on YOUR experiences, the survey asks you to share what it’s like to be #workingwhileblack in the broadcast, TV, digital, print, and news industry in Canada by taking an anonymous, 20-minute survey.
This project is led by Nana aba Duncan, an associate professor and Carty Chair in Journalism, Diversity and Inclusion Studies at Carleton University, who also worked as a journalist in Canada for 15 years. Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, this survey will help shape strategies to support Black journalists and media workers. Insights from the survey will be included in Reporting in Black Communities, a forthcoming guide (2026) on reporting on Black communities with accuracy, dignity and equity.
*Media worker: reporters, editors, photographers, videographers, producers, assignment staff, chasers, writers, leaders, assistants, researchers, hosts – anyone who does editorial work within the broadcast, TV, digital, print and news industry.
