George Lucas has never been able to leave well enough alone with the original trilogy of Star Wars films, and now we have a nifty side-by-side breakdown of all the tweaks and changes.
YouTube user Marcelo Zuniga has put together some meticulously edited and researched clips showing all the changes between the original theatrical cuts of the films, and the Special Editions and updated releases that came in 2004 and 2011. Greedo shooting first is the most obvious change, but these clips break down everything from updated effects to tiny sound tweaks from “zips” to “pings.”
Obviously, it’s not all bad. There’s an inherent charm to the low-tech, practical effects of the first films. Some of the color and sharpening could definitely use a good tweak after all these years. Plus, does an updated transition shot showing a more detailed alien world hurt the experience? Not really, no. But there’s something to be said for just letting a film exist as a representation for what it was and the era in which it was created.
