Greetings,
This fall, British Columbians will vote for a new government in a critical election that will determine the future direction of our province. Unifor local unions and our members must play a key role to ensure that our gains as workers and citizens in a caring society are protected and expanded, not eroded and attacked. Together, we have made a difference in the past two elections and we will do the same in this election with your help. As part of our election preparations, we will be offering opportunities to train key Unifor local union activists to help with our Unifor Votes BC Member-to-Member campaign to demand action on issues impacting British Columbia workers. Many of the trained activists will go on to form the core of our Member-to-Member campaign effort, receiving paid book offs following the training up to the election on October 19th and helping to motivate thousands of Unifor members in BC to vote in the process. Others will receive training and leave with the information and tools needed to take back to their own workplace and community to encourage coworkers to get involved and make a difference. We ask all British Columbia locals to identify motivated individuals from their local union now who will work with the Member-to-Member team, their local executive and the national union this fall to make sure that we inform and mobilize our members to volunteer and vote in this important election. These individuals should also be eligible for book offs or otherwise available to volunteer during some or all of the election period to assist with our campaign if required. The training sessions will be held September 19 and 20 at the New Westminster Unifor Office (326 – 12th Street, New Westminster, BC) from 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. with lunch to be provided. WHAT: Training for Unifor Votes Member to Member election campaign All regularly scheduled lost time wages (i.e.: no overtime rates or other premiums) will be reimbursed to the local union by the National Union for the trained activist member who attends the course and who are selected to join the core Member-to-Member team. All expenses must be pre-approved and will be reimbursed in accordance with the National Union’s Local Union Expense Policy, attached. Any questions regarding these policies and procedures can be directed to the National Union’s Membership Mobilization and Political Action Director at [email protected]. Please provide contact information for individuals endorsed by their local union who will be available to receive training and have the ability to receive leave from their employer. Contact information includes cell phone, email and home address (so we can locate their home electoral district). Space is limited so please let us know as soon as possible but no later than August 15, 2024. Please send the identified members information to Susan Muchhala at [email protected] as soon as possible on contact us with any questions. Together, we have made a difference in the past two elections and we will do the same in this election with your help. In Solidarity, Leanne Marsh Gavin McGarrigle |
