Unifor and its staff union, the Canadian National Representatives Union (CNRU), have each donated $5,000 to Canadian Blood Services in support of National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, highlighting the urgent need to boost donor registration across the country.
As of this month, more than 4,100 Canadians are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. While 90 per cent of Canadians support organ donation, only 32 per cent have formally registered.
“Organ donation is a deeply personal choice, but it is also an act of solidarity,” said Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer Len Poirier. “If we believe in building a compassionate society, we have to act on that belief—and that starts with registering.”
National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week runs from April 20 to 26, 2025. The campaign aims to increase awareness and encourage more Canadians to make a decision that could save or improve lives.
The matched donation by CNRU demonstrates the shared values of Unifor staff and leadership.
“Our members see the power of community every day, and we believe in making a difference wherever we can,” said CNRU President DJ Lacey. “This contribution is a small but important step to help close the gap between support and action on organ donation.”
