Unifor Local 2000 has learned a third Postmedia executive is now leaving the company after $2.3 million in “retention” bonuses were announced last fall.
The company announced Friday that Gord Fisher is retiring at the end of April.
Fisher, president of National Post and the Pacific Newspaper Group, was allotted $200,000 in bonuses – double to triple the typical salary for staff working at the Vancouver Sun and Province. The bonuses were scheduled in three installments, with the third due on July 14, 2017. It’s not clear if Fisher will receive the final bonus payment, which is subject to conditions. Paul Godfrey, Postmedia President and CEO, was paid $1.66 million in 2016, even though the company is saddled with a massive debt of $307 million.
Meanwhile, Postmedia is pushing for 54 layoffs at the Vancouver Sun and Province. Unifor Local 2000 is challenging the layoffs and negotiating to save as many jobs as possible.
Unifor Local 2000 backs the position of our sister chapter, 87M, and CWA in calling for the bonuses rescinded to be spent on retaining workers.
