Queen’s Printer is seeking an experienced XML Editor to cover a leave of absence, ending approximately January 2014.
This position prepares and publishes provincial legislation, legal documents, BC Building Codes, the provincial budget and other content on the web, on mobile devices and in print. The work is extremely detailed and must be exact as the legal profession, public and private sector organizations and the public rely on the material presented on the various web-sites. This position works under the pressure of deadlines to ensure information is published in a timely manner.
The XML Editor provides desktop publishing, substantive editing, copy editing and proofing services for government and public sector publications. The position receives legislative amendments to existing legislation from Legislative Counsel, transfer data to a working directory and codes of XML for correct formatting. Some data is converted to HTML and uploaded to various websites.
The XML Editor is required to use a variety of software programs including MS Office, Framemaker, InDesign, Oxygen (XML editor), Dreamweaver (HTML editor) and other custom department created applications.
This position requires a journeyperson typesetter/compositor with at least three years experience in processing materials for web sites or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training. You must have experience and demonstrated proficiency in HTML and XML editing as well as experience using MS Office, InDesign, Photoshop, Powerpoint and Acrobat. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Framemaker, Beyond Compare and Oxygen.
The position requires knowledge of web tools, HTML and SML editor tools. Superior editing and proof-reading skills are required. You must demonstrate an ability to perform work under tight timeframes that require a high degree of attention to detail with a very low error rate. You must be able to work as part of a team in close proximity to other team members for effective dialogue.
The hours of work for the first 6 months is Monday – Friday (5 days/week) from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.. After the 6 month period other work options including a 4 day work week are available.
