The provincial government is creating a new stream within the Digital Media Tax Credit to support the animation industry.

The move follows changes to the film tax credit, which has been transitioned to a new fund contained in the Liberal government’s budget. When the changes were first announced, industry members said Nova Scotia was no longer a competitive jurisdiction and predicted the death of what was a growing sector.

At the time, Michael Donovan, chairman of DHX Media, said the company would pull out of Nova Scotia if the changes were not amended. That and other criticism prompted a flurry of meetings between government officials and industry representatives that first led to a different arrangement for the film and television industry and then to the new arrangement for animation, announced Wednesday.
