Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington last month issued a joyous statement about efforts by employees at the famous digital news site to unionize: “Our top priority is always the happiness and well-being of our employees. We fully support our newsroom employees’ right to discuss unionizing and will embrace whatever decision they make on this issue.”
That nod has apparently had an impact around the Huffington Post’s sprawling editorial operation, as union organizers today sent around a letter to colleagues citing progress toward unionization, with about 80 signatures from newsroom staffers who’ve already signed a union card. “We cherish working here and know that many of our friends and colleagues do too. We would feel even more invested in the place we love if we were employed under a union contract,” reads the letter, a whopping nine-paragraph contribution to long-form labor organizing.
The document touts the merits of a progressive news outlet internalizing its principles: “Unionizing is one way for us to stand by the ideals we often preach on our site,” notes the letter.
