Email sent Aug. 3, 2023, to our members at Burnaby Now and the New Westminster Record:
“On July 31, 2023, the company issued notice under Section 54 of the BC Labour Code their intent to shut down print operations as of August 11, 2023. The notice stated that the company will layoff members on August 11, 2023. The digital operations will continue. Section 54 Notice was also given for Tri-City News.
“Under the Labour Code, the company is required to give the union 60 days notice in order to meet with the union to discuss ways in which to limit the impact of the changes being proposed. We have demanded that the company continue printing operations until an agreement is reached.
“We are setting dates to meet with the company. We will update you as we get more information.”

UPDATE: We are meeting with the company starting August 9 in hopes of negotiating an adjustment plan in order to lessen the impact.
