The question of whether or not a video game can be considered art has been around for quite a while.
Noteworthy critic Roger Ebert once claimed that not only were video games not art, but that “video games represent a loss of those precious hours we have available to make ourselves more cultured, civilized and empathetic.”
There is also the overly simplistic criticism that games, especially early examples like Pong and Pac-Man, only exist to entertain.
