Our union continues to evolve along with the industries in which our members work.
Delegates from across B.C. at Unifor Local 2000’s 17th annual Congress in Vancouver over the weekend voted to change our financial structure to reflect current realities, to reduce the number of fulltime paid officers and to have a membership referendum on a number of Local bylaw amendments.
Past “loans” from the Defence Fund to the General Fund have been forgiven. A new Contingency Fund has been created with approximately $2.2 million from the Defence Fund. Going forward the Local Defence Fund will be maintained at $1 million with any deficit being made up from the Contingency Fund. At the end of each year any Defence Fund surplus over $1 million will be transferred to the Contingency Fund. Money from the Contingency Fund can be transferred into the General Fund by a majority vote of the Executive. Each year Congress will review all such transfers.
Going forward there will be two fulltime paid officers, the president and secretary-treasurer. Two vice-president positions will no longer be paid full-time. The Local Executive will have the discretion to book-off vice-presidents as needed.
There will an election for secretary-treasurer (three-year term) and vice-president (one-year term).
Current Vice-President Rob Munro, Postmedia Council Chair Brian Gibson and Black Press Council Chair Jessica Unger are running for the secretary-treasurer position.
Glacier Council Chair Chris Labreque and Glacier Council Secretary Jennifer Moreau are running for the vice-president position.
Ballots will be sent out next week.
Referendum ballots will be sent out later. Most of the referendum questions are of a “housekeeping” nature. Each will be explained with material accompanying the ballots.
