National Union of Journalists (UK) online event with Unifor reps:

Monday, April 24 · 9 – 10 am PDT

Join us online on 24 April at the NUJ’s webinar exploring abuse and threats to journalists’ safety. Find out what action we’re taking to tackle abuse and hear from speakers exploring global threats and campaigns to fight back against harassment.

Chaired by Jeremy Dear, former deputy general secretary of the International Federation of Journalists, he will update members on action the IFJ is taking including calls for a UN convention to protect journalists. The IFJ’s annual killed list revealed 68 media workers were murdered around the world in 2022.

Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, will discuss a Journalists’ Safety Toolkit launched last year as part of the union’s commitment to tackling violence against journalists, while equipping members with useful guidance on topics including lawfare and cybersecurity.

Rana Rahimpour, former BBC Persian senior presenter and journalist featured in the NUJ’s safety film will share her experiences of harassment, and why she chose to participate in the film.

Jennifer Moreau is a National Representative with Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, with more than 310,000 members in a wide range of industries. She will speak about Unifor’s ground-breaking work fighting online harassment of media workers.

She was originally working as a community reporter when she got more involved in her union, holding an elected, fulltime position with her local. She also served as chair of Unifor’s Media Council which represents roughly 11,000 media workers. She sits on the International Federation of Journalists’ Executive Committee, Gender Council and the Climate Action Team.

Randy Kitt is the Director of Media for Unifor representing over 10,000 media workers across Canada. Previously, as a production video editor for Bell Media (CTV, TSN and Discovery Channel) for 20 years, he worked his way up the union ranks to become the president of Local 79M and the first Unifor Media Council Chairperson.

He will join Jennifer to talk about Media Policy issues and the fight against the harassment of journalists and media workers.
