WHAT: Four longtime community news reporters, the Union Cooperative Initiative and Unifor have joined forces to launch the Save Our Local News campaign. This bold initiative aims to create a fresh, trusted and reliable news publication in the growing communities of New Westminster, the Tri-Cities and Burnaby.

WHY: Thousands of residents and organizations in New Westminster, the Tri-Cities and Burnaby communities have lost access to their longstanding local news publications with the recent closures of the New Westminster Record, Burnaby Now and Tri-City News. This has sparked interest in developing a new worker-led and community driven model for local news — one that puts communities over profits.

WHO: Cornelia Naylor, Burnaby Now; Mario Bartel, Tri-City News; Janis Cleugh, Tri-City News; and Theresa McManus, New Westminster Record. They will be joined by Jonny Sopotiuk, Managing Director, Union Cooperative Initiative; Brian Gibson, President, Unifor Local 2000; and Bill Catterall, Secretary–Treasurer, Unifor Local 2000.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 12 p.m.

WHERE: Unifor BC Western Regional Office, 326 12th St., New Westminster
