March 18 Vancouver Sun/Province
Longtime Postmedia reporter John Mackie has been nominated for a National Newspaper Award.
Mackie is up for the Bob Levin Award for short features for a piece profiling two former political foes and quadriplegics, Sam Sullivan and Tim Louis.
“John crafted a beautifully written story about the unlikely friendship between political opposites. A bright light during these dark days of toxic political partisanship,” said Harold Munro, editor-in-chief of The Vancouver Sun and Province.
“His work illustrates a commitment to local journalism shared by all of us in the Vancouver newsroom who are privileged to tell stories every day about our remarkable province.”
The nominated piece details how Sullivan and Louis, despite being political opposites and having no physical resemblance besides use of a wheelchair, have been frequently confused for one another and the humour the pair have found in that and their friendship.
